Unlike most other operating systems, Apple iOS does not allow traditional management agents for technical and licensing reasons. To manage an Apple iOS device, Apple provides the Apple MDM APIs, which allow built-in management functionality. Apple iOS devices need to "Enroll" (Apple terminology for connecting a device to a management server) to activate the management functionality.

Prerequisites

Enrolling Apple iOS devices using the device web browser

  1. From the Apple iOS browser, enter the URL https://<mdm server name specified in the Fixlet>. Example: https://mdm.mycompany.com. (The link can also be sent via email or text message).
  2. Click the first link to add the certificate (this will not be required if using an HTTPS certificate from a trusted source).
  3. Click the second link to enroll the device.
  4. Click to approve the prompts.

After a few minutes, the devices should appear in your TEM console.

Enrolling Apple iOS devices using the IBM Mobile Client app from the Apple App Store

IBM has submitted the IBM Mobile Client to Apple to be placed on the Apple App Store. After it is accepted, it can be used to enroll the device without using the browser. The installation process will include:

  1. Install the IBM Mobile Client app from the Apple App Store
  2. Open the app. When prompted, enter the dns name / IP address of the Management Extender for iOS, email, and owner of the device.
  3. When prompted, click to install the MDM profile to enable management.
